Accessibility and parking

IJmuiden and most of the centres in Velsen are easily accessible by public transport. This also applies if you come by bike. Our municipality is connected to the national bicycle network. Are you coming by car? Then take the A9/A22 (from the direction of Alkmaar and Amstelveen), the N202 (from Amsterdam-West) and the N208 (from Haarlem).

Children up to 12 years travel free by bus

Children up to 12 years of age, accompanied by an adult, will travel by bus for free. The scheme applies in the areas where the province is the client for bus transport: Noord-Holland Noord and Haarlem/IJmond.

Public transport

IJmuiden is connected to R-net. Because of this, there are regular buses from Amsterdam-Sloterdijk (line 382) and Haarlem Centraal (line 385). Bus 3 goes via Velserbroek and Driehuis to IJmuiden. Bus 74 connects Beverwijk and Velsen-Noord with IJmuiden. The municipality of Velsen has three train stations: Santpoort-Zuid, Santpoort-Noord and Driehuis. From there you can be in Amsterdam or Alkmaar in half an hour. In Driehuis, travellers can change to line 3 (Van den Vondellaan) or line 385 (Westerveld).

Parking

Of course you want to park your car, preferably for free, in front of the door. In the municipality of Velsen, this is possible almost everywhere. Paid parking is only compulsory in a few places, namely in the centre of IJmuiden (only the car parks close to the shops) and near the beach (during the summer season). Parking at the beach of IJmuiden aan Zee is free for the first 30 minutes during the winter season (1 November – 29 February) on working days (Monday to Friday) excluding holidays. Ferry schedules

The ferries run every 20 minutes, day and night, seven days a week. Pedestrians, (moped) cyclists and other slow-moving traffic have priority on the ferries and can travel free of charge. Motorised ferry users pay for the crossing.

IJmuiden water taxi

Watertaxi IJmuiden is a ferry service for people and bicycles between IJmuiden and Velsen-Noord (not free). Every first Sunday of the month, there is a stop on the Fort Island. The water taxi sails four times a day, daily from 4 April to 4 October. For more information and rates see the website of Watertaxi IJmuiden.

Disabled persons

There are four locations in the municipality of Velsen that offer beach wheelchairs for free use on the beach. Beach wheelchairs are often made of plastic and have large wheels, making it easier to drive through the sand and sometimes even into the sea. In this way, disabled people and those with mobility problems can also experience a day at the beach. There is also the possibility to use the beach taxi.

Beach wheelchair Noordpier

Outstanding Events has one beach wheelchair available. The navigation address is: Reyndersweg 2, 1951 LA Velsen Noord. Parking is possible in the car park of the Sea You restaurant. There are a number of parking spaces for disabled people. The beach wheelchair can be collected from the pavilion free of charge.

Beach wheelchair IJmuiden aan Zee

Beach pavilion Noordzee has two beach wheelchairs available and Zuidpier has one beach wheelchair available. These are made entirely of plastic. The soft and wide pneumatic tyres make the beach wheelchairs extremely suitable for driving on the beach. The beach wheelchairs are resistant to seawater, so that you can take them into the water for a short distance. In order to make the beach more accessible for people with disabilities, the beach pavilions provide these beach wheelchairs free of charge. The chairs are available all year round. Disabled parking spaces are also available near the beach entrance in the car park.

Beach wheelchair IJmuiderslag

Beach pavilion Beach Inn has one beach wheelchair available and is located at Kennemerstrand 800 and can be reached via (0255) 520 222.

Parking

At the three beaches in the municipality there are several possibilities to park for disabled people. There are four parking spaces available per beach. At the Apollo Hotel IJmuiden Seaport Beach, there is also the possibility to park. In the hotel you can make use of the lift. This takes you to the Kennemerboulevard. There are two disabled parking spaces in front of the hotel.

Beach Taxi

There is also a possibility for people with disabilities and people who have difficulty walking, to be taken by a beach taxi from the car park to the IJmuiden beach. On the page ‘beach taxi’ you can find more information.
